Wincanton Cares – Newsletter – July / August 2026

Welcome to the latest edition of the Wincanton Cares Newsletter, bringing together news, local information, events and practical support for carers, families and anyone living in the BA9 area who may need a helping hand. This summer's newsletter includes a moving personal story of recovery after a fall, highlighting the value of local health services and the support available when life suddenly takes an unexpected turn. You'll also find details of community events, including Wincanton's Jamboree Day, information about the newly reopened Wincanton Plaza cinema, news from the town's new pharmacy, advice for keeping safe during the warmer months and a full programme of Wincanton Cares activities and local support groups. Whether you're an unpaid carer, living independently, supporting a loved one or simply looking to become more connected with your local community, we hope you'll discover something helpful, encouraging or enjoyable here.

A Tumble, a Team and a Lot of Hope

An Encouraging Message from a Wincanton Cares Colleague

At the end of April I “took a tumble” – my preferred phrase – when my knee suddenly gave way while I was at the sink. I have an emergency plan for falls, but this time, when I tried to stand… nothing. I simply couldn’t weight bear.

The next day a friend took me to the doctor. (A reminder for anyone who needs it: Wincanton Surgery has a wheelchair you can use any time.) The GP couldn’t see any obvious damage but they did do two really important things that I want to share.

1. A Referral to the Falls Team

This brilliant team includes District Nurses, Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists.

You can refer yourself at any time – please keep their number safe:

030 124 5600

2. A Referral to the Rapid Response Team

They provide short-term care at home for up to five days. Because I already have a weekday carer, this support meant I wasn’t left struggling over the weekend.

A couple of weeks later, the Falls Team assessed me and discovered I had a badly sprained ankle with ligament damage. Because I have a spinal cord injury I don’t feel pain in the same way as most people – no wonder I couldn’t stand.

They showed me exercises for my foot, and with my carer’s help (and a lot of perseverance) I worked on them several times a day, taking care not to rush.

For about four weeks I used a wheelchair. Then I moved on to a Zimmer frame – kindly loaned to me by Wincanton Cares, who have equipment free of charge for anyone who needs it.

When I began standing again my knee started to hurt. I contacted the Falls Team and a physio came the very next day with strengthening exercises. And they worked.

Seven Weeks On…

I’m standing better than I have in years.

The exercises have made a huge difference and I’m now moving on to a heavier wheeled walker – again loaned by Wincanton Cares.

Why I’m Sharing This

I hope my story gives you a bit of hope. There are services out there. You are not alone.

If you’re unsure how to navigate the system, Wincanton Cares can help you find the right support when times are tough.

Good luck – and take care of yourselves and each other.

Wincanton Pharmacy

Our new pharmacy at 7 High Street, Wincanton has been operating for several months now and, for those of us who live in the more eastern areas of town, or perhaps on or near the High Street, it is proving extremely useful.

The pharmacist, Jonathan, is kindness itself and is ably assisted by Bhavika. He is always happy to offer advice about any of our minor health concerns.

The pharmacy dispenses NHS prescriptions promptly and, if an over-the-counter medicine isn’t on the shelves, the team will do their best to order it for you.

In addition, they offer a range of services including:

  • Travel vaccinations
  • Microsuction earwax removal
  • Free blood pressure checks
  • A weight loss service

Opening Times

Monday to Friday: 9.00 am – 6.00 pm

Saturday: 9.00 am – 1.00 pm

They are always pleased to meet us, so do call in and pick up a leaflet to register for their services if you haven’t already.

The pharmacy is run by Medicine Clinic. You can find out more by visiting:

Be Cool!

As I write, the weather has changed from being far too hot to a wee bit chilly. But we’re only just at the beginning of July, so don’t be fooled – it could still get hot again during July and August.

If, or when, it does, here are a few simple ways to stay cool and well:

  • Drink plenty of cold drinks, preferably non-alcoholic.
  • Enjoy cooling foods such as cucumber, watermelon and salads as part of your normal diet.
  • Take a lukewarm shower, or even a cool one if you can manage it (but not for too long – let’s save water too!).
  • Wear lightweight clothing, put on a hat when you’re outdoors and be generous with SPF 50+ sunscreen.

Lots to to talk about in this Spring/Summer newsletter. First things first, meet our new Benefits Officer who can advise on all sorts of help that might be available for us. We’ll introduce you to Michael. We are also looking at the changes in the NHS and how they might affect you, including a new Healthwatch organisation. We take a look at Wincanton Library and what it has to offer – more than books apparently, and we’ll also recap on some of the very sensible advice from Neighbourhood Watch. Let’s go!
